Why Is “Gangsta” Papagomo Back In The News?

The latest news concerning Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, better known as Papagomo, is that he seems to be denying an admission made in court.

The legal team for Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil is examining Papagomo’s social media activity following the settlement of a defamation lawsuit between the two of them.

The minister said he had received feedback from various parties regarding Papagomo’s latest statements and would seek legal advice to determine whether they breached the terms of the court settlement.

On Monday, the suits filed by Fahmi against Papagomo and PAS politician Mohd Fauzan Madzlan were settled at the High Court after both parties reached an agreement. However, the legal action against preacher Ahmad Dusuki Abdul Rani is continuing after no settlement was reached.

According to the writ of summons and statement of claim filed on Sept 5, 2023, Fahmi alleged that all three defendants published defamatory statements accusing him of misusing a mosque for election campaigning and acting against a decree by the Sultan of Selangor.

Both Papagomo and Fauzan admitted in court that Fahmi’s speech at a mosque in Rawang, Selangor on July 30, 2023, during the state election period was not a political campaign nor politically motivated.

However they declined to publicly admit it in media statements, presumably so they could spin the news differently to supporters.

This is far from the first time that the physically imposing and intellectually stunted Papagomo has made the news in a negative way.

Just last week – he was fined RM4,000 by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on March 30, 2026, for sedition.

He was found guilty of inciting hatred against the King, his Majesty Sultan Ibrahim regarding a 2024 social media post about a royal audience with the owner of the KK Mart chain.

In December 2024, former IGP Razarudin Husain filed a defamation suit against Papagomo, labelling him a prostitute and a flatterer of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in posts uploaded on social media.

Also in the same month he was arrested at his residence on 13 December 2024 by a team of police officers to help investigate a case of fraud in the collection of public funds by using the name of a company.

The arrest was made by a team of members of the Bukit Aman Money Laundering Crime Investigation Team (AMLA).

He has also twice been fined for a 2019 physical attack against Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and a 2016 assault on a foreign worker in a mall.

A former Umno Youth leader, he was suspended by the party in 2021 for a six year period.

Perhaps the question remains – why does such a troubled and provocative character still have a hold on his audience. Even while spouting bile, his videos resonate with a certain demographic who somehow see him as a victim instead of a villain.
