Steadfast Leadership: PM Anwar Shields Rakyat Amid Global Fuel Surge

Even as the escalating conflict involving Iran sends global crude oil prices soaring, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has acted decisively to protect Malaysians, especially the most vulnerable.

Through the government’s targeted subsidy policy under the BUDI MADANI initiative, subsidised RON95 will remain at RM1.99 per litre, shielding ordinary Malaysians from the full impact of rising fuel costs.

Countries around the world are feeling the strain. Reports show at least 85 nations have already raised petrol prices since February 28, while jet fuel prices surged more than 80 per cent last week, pushing airfares higher.

Malaysia, like the rest of the world, cannot escape these global shocks. Retail fuel prices for Peninsular Malaysia were adjusted yesterday, where RON97 increased to RM3.85 per litre, unsubsidised RON95 to RM3.27, and diesel to RM3.92.

Yet amid these pressures, Anwar’s decision to maintain targeted subsidies demonstrates leadership that is firm, compassionate, and people-centered. While many governments pass the burden directly to citizens, he has ensured the rakyat remains protected.

This is leadership Malaysians can trust. A leader who sees, understands, and acts for the people, even when global challenges loom large.

Energy subsidies are not cheap. Maintaining targeted assistance while global prices surge requires careful fiscal management and political courage. Yet Anwar has shown that protecting the rakyat remains central to his administration’s priorities.

This approach reflects the leadership Malaysians have come to expect from him. Throughout his long political journey, Anwar has consistently emphasised policies that put people at the centre of governance.

The MADANI framework itself, built on principles of compassion, sustainability, and responsible leadership, is exemplified in this decisive action.
