Blogger Murray Hunter Retracts Articles, Apologises To MCMC After Legal Settlement

Australian blogger Murray Victor Hunter has issued a public apology and fully retracted several articles about the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as part of a legal settlement with the regulator.

In a statement published on his Substack page on January 13, Hunter acknowledged that his writings about MCMC and its personnel were “inaccurate, misleading and have led to misunderstandings”.

“I therefore apologise and regret if such actions caused any damage to MCMC and/or related persons, and I hereby fully retract all such comments and articles in their entirety,” he added.

The retractions cover articles published between April and November 2024 on platforms including his Substack blog, Eurasia Review and his X account, which contained allegations ranging from abuse of power to claims of political interference at MCMC.

Hunter, an Australian based in Thailand, reached the settlement after legal action by MCMC.

In October 2025, the Shah Alam High Court found him liable for defamation in a civil suit brought by the commission, reinforcing that freedom of speech must be exercised responsibly.

The dispute also involved criminal proceedings in Thailand, where Hunter was arrested in relation to the matter earlier last year before being released on bail.

MCMC said the court ruling and settlement underscored that false and defamatory claims can harm reputations and that it remains committed to upholding accountability in Malaysia’s digital space.

The settlement brings the long-running dispute to a close without further court hearings.
