The Politics Behind MalaysiaNow

MalaysiaNow is a little-read news portal spewing hatred against the prime minister and the Madani government.

Despite its poor readership, it is part of – network coordinated by former minister Azmin Ali and his lackeys.

MalaysiaNow did not grow organically as an independent news portal, as it emerged during one of the most troubling periods in Malaysia’s political history – the Sheraton Move.

This when the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government came to power through defections, not elections.

As PN struggled to gain public trust, MalaysiaNow suddenly appeared with strong visibility and resources, including huge billboards across the Klang Valley. For a young digital portal, this raised serious questions about funding and who was backing it.

MalaysiaNow is run by Abdar Rahman Koya, brother of Latheefa Koya, the former Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission chief.

The siblings are known supporters of Azmin, while another sibling Zakiah Koya served as officer to PN’s Annuar Musa.

MalaysiaNow’s reporting has been consistently hostile towards Pakatan Harapan and now the Madani government, while being far less critical of PN-linked leaders.

The government is almost always portrayed negatively and policies are questioned with suspicion. Reforms are framed as failures even before they are given time to work.

Recent examples show this clearly. In the so-called whistleblower Albert Teh’s case, outrage was highlighted selectively, without proper legal context.

In the Masjid India temple issue, reporting seemed more focused on stirring emotions than explaining facts. Indeed they misrepresented the building as being 130 years old.

In the Tengku Maimun case, suggestions and assumptions were pushed before investigations were completed. In all three cases, MalaysiaNow did more than report the news. It spread a negative agenda.

MalaysiaNow operates alongside allies like Lawyers for Liberty. The group was co-founded by N. Surendran, a former PKR leader who now openly opposes the current government. It is also well known in political circles that Surendran is a confidante of Latheefa.

MalaysiaNow now often appears to move in step with Malaysiakini and The Coverage. The same themes, angles and attacks on the government appear at the same time across these platforms.

It has become predictable and coordinated, less like balanced journalism and more like political attacks carried out through media platforms.
