I Binned My Malaysiakini Subscription – Here’s Why

I have been a Pakatan supporter since the days of Reformasi and I’m disappointed. I’m disappointed that there have not been more reforms from the Anwar government. Even if we consider that Madani relies on BN and GPS for support, it’s frustrating that Pakatan hasn’t tried to bring more legislation to the Dewan Rakyat.

If we try and fail, such as with the prime ministerial term limits, at least the supporters and voters like myself know that it’s not the fault of Pakatan Harapan.

Over the years there have been many waves of defectors and traitors from Pakatan and I don’t think that the Bersama wave supporting Rafizi Ramli is going to the biggest one to rock the boat.

But why I’m writing is that I noticed that Malaysiakini has turned into the biggest bashers of the Madani government! Today there are about eight issues in which they are openly slamming Anwar, PH and Madani. How did this happen?

I asked a friend who used to work in the marketing wing there and this person told me that there is a curious split even within Malaysiakini. It’s a substantial list.

Many former top editors and reporters there are now serving the Madani government including K. Kabilan, Nigel Aw, Martin Vengadesan, Aedi Asri, Annabelle Lee, Ng Xiang Yi, Cha Zhi Ting and Wong Kang Jia.

Other Malaysiakini alumni like Lu Wei Hong, Regina Lee, Anne Muhammad and Rahmah Ghazali moved to the government earlier.

So how come the once-respected website is giving such a platform to all the Madani haters like Rafizi, Latheefa Koya, Zaid Ibrahim, Tian Chua, Kua Kia Soong and other former Pakatan lawmakers?

I was told that at least one of the portals top leaders takes his order from Tian Chua. And that another openly uses four-letter words against Anwar on a daily basis.

Things really aren’t what they seem.

Its own reporter Nantha Kumar was arrested by the MACC after trying to blackmail a whistleblower in an immigration syndicate, and charged at the Shah Alam Sessions Court on March 14, 2025 with receiving RM20,000 in exchange for retracting and not uploading articles about a cartel involving foreign workers.

Malaysiakini co-founder and CEO Premesh Chandran has a private company, Asia Mobiliti, which was co-founded with Ramachandran Muniandy, who is FT Minister Hannah Yeoh’s husband. They got a contract without any open tender.

What’s most alarming is that some of its own top leaders were involved in an embezzlement case, with news three months ago that representatives of its board filed a police report concerning the diversion of RM3,000,000 from its subsidiaries.

The diversion was from third-party entities suspected of running unlicensed investment schemes. My friend told me that those with their hands dirty were very high up in the company. In fact, the same guys who took the RM3,000,000 signed off on retrenchments in October 2024!

Perhaps this explains Malaysiakini’s shift? Is the portal serving new masters for financial purposes?

I stopped subscribing because I don’t want to be taken for a ride and I realised that everything they carry is just designed to fuel your anger against Anwar. They don’t offer any good alternatives, just tear down the saviour whom they spent 20 years promoting.

In the end, Malaysiakini has become a vessel for the disgruntled. Who are the readers going to support if this government falls and there is a new one with Umno and PAS to take its place?
