Famous thief Jho Low has done something that has left many Malaysians shaking their heads.
The fugitive financier, one of the key figures behind the 1MDB scandal, is now asking for a pardon from United States President Donald Trump.
What cheek! He has never even faced a court in Malaysia.
Jho Low has been charged in the United States for serious offences linked to billions of dollars believed to be taken from 1MDB.
He has also been wanted for years, but he has not returned to face the law, and his location is still unknown.
Now, instead of coming forward, instead of answering questions, instead of proving his innocence in court, he is asking for a pardon.
How can someone run away from justice, and at the same time ask to be forgiven?
In legal terms, asking for a pardon is not an admission of guilt. Most would agree on one simple thing. If you say you are innocent, you should go to court and prove it.
Not hide. Not disappear. And definitely not try to clear your name without explaining yourself.
This is why many Malaysians feel frustrated. The 1MDB scandal was not a small issue.
It affected the country’s reputation, shook public trust, and became one of the biggest financial scandals in the world.
Instead of answers, what they are seeing feels like a shortcut and an insult to justice.
The victims of Jho Low’s theft are the ordinary rakyat of Malaysia. He stole our houses, hospitals and schools so he could live lavishly.
And let’s not forget – there are many financial criminals from the Mahathir and Najib era living freely in mansions around Malaysia!
At least he’s still alive. I would think somebody murdered him by now. Knows too many people’s secrets.
